Southwyck golf course architect Ken Kavanaugh re-created a true Scottish-links style course when he built Southwyck in 1988 on the open prairie southeast of downtown Houston. Southwyck originally was conceived as a private country club that would cater to accomplished golfers, but after Houston’s oil bust in the ’80s, developers decided to make it a public, daily-fee facility providing a country club experience for daily-fee golfers.

Kavanaugh created an intriguing layout with as many as five tee locations per hole and various approaches to the greens. Water comes into play on 13 holes and wind sweeps across the prairie just like it does in Scotland. Southwyck has been one of the home courses for the University of Houston golf team, which has won an unprecedented 16 NCAA team titles.
